Careers in Orthopedic Medicine - Physician and Surgeon

$7.95

The musculoskeletal system is quite complicated because it includes 206 bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves as well as the blood supply that surrounds them. Just like other medical specialties, the orthopedic physician has completed up to 14 years of medical training in order to understand the "workings" of the human musculoskeletal system.

This orthopedic specialist's job entails high levels of skill in determining whether an individual needs medications, physical therapy, an exercise plan, casts, supports or surgery to handle the pain and range of motion of the patient's particular medical problem. The orthopedic physician's goal is to allow his patient to move, work and be active.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons most physicians consider themselves as general orthopedic surgeons with a specialty interest. Others may consider themselves general orthopedic surgeons, while a smaller number look at themselves as specialists within orthopedic surgery. In recent years, younger orthopedic surgeons just entering the field are more likely to designate themselves as specialists rather than generalists with a specialty interest.
