What the Experts Say

“Outside of Ansel Adams’ Basic Photo Series, From Basic to Fine Art, by Joel Tjintjelaar and Julia Anna Gospodarou, is the best book on black and white photography written in the last 40 years.” (…) “The importance of the book is reached in Julia’s and Joel’s abilities to blend the practice of classical form and content in vision and technique, so that Form is Content. While others claim to have achieved this state of aesthetic grace, this is the first time I have seen it accomplished with great skill and with a brilliant explanation of how to get there.” (…) “ I consider Julia’s (en)Visionography and Photography Drawing the most important innovation in black and white photography since the invention of the Zone System.”

- George DeWolfe – Fine Art Photographer, Instructor & Writer (Luminous Landscape)

Testimonials

“In today’s humankind ever-increasing urge for homogenization and uniformity, Joel and Julia stand out. Joel is the modern equivalent of what Ansel Adams did for black & white photography in the film era, always exploring new horizons, new techniques, and new frontiers to explore. Julia Anna, on the other hand, is the chimera of Imogen Cunningham and Vivian Maier, merging one of the sharpest eyes in the art world with the artistic flair to make every image canvas come alive."

- Dr. Charles Paul Azzopardi – Fine Art Photographer & Medical Doctor

“I have now finished reading the book from beginning to end. For anyone who is both passionate and willing to understand what Fine Art Black and White Photography is all about, this book in an absolute must buy in my opinion. The way in which both Joel and Julia explain everything is easy to follow and with great detail. Not only do they explain their personal vision but also share some of their secrets in what it takes to produce some of the best Fine Art Architecture images around today. I have been making Black and White photographs for a few years and I have learnt so much from these two photographers especially as they explain how to approach architecture, understanding the light and reaching out for a better composition. If architecture is not your thing but long exposure photography in general is, Joel and Julia explain everything there is to know about the subject including some of the pitfalls to watch out for. All in all, this is the one book which i will reach for time and time again for both interesting reading and also as a great reference source.”

- Ian Barber – Fine Art Photographer & Instructor

"I am quite certain that for all black and white photographers at least, that this epic new publication will rest comfortably alongside the Bruce Barnbaum bible ("Art of Photography"). Barnbaum managed to straddle the old wet and analogue process of photography, and the new, digital age. He gave us an insight into the art of the process, whether A or D, and his ideas are still relevant today. Gospodarou and Tjintjelaar have finally given black and white photography a massive – not to say transcending – push into the digital age!  (…) ...an amazing – not to say epic – book, which not only is a great read – especially with all its practical advice - but is a ‘good book’ as well: it will be read, and cherished, for many years to come."

- Jack Torcello – Fine Art Photographer & Writer

"Julia Anna Gospodarou and Joel Tjintjelaar - Masters In Fine Art Photography. Julia and Joel have entered an exclusive club in the world of photography once reserved for the likes of Ansel Adams, Julius Brassai, Minor White, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. They are accomplished international award winning photographers. (…) Their book From Basics to Fine Art is superbly presented providing all the means for creating fine art photographic images. (...) As you explore its contents you will fine that they have removed the uncertainty and mystique in creating black and white fine art images. Their goal is quite simple, provide the tools and foundation to develop one’s confidence, personal style, and creative vision in the medium of fine art imagery. (…) What’s nice about adding “From Basics To Fine Art ” to your library is that it is timeless, always there for inspiration as a resource for creating superb fine art photographs. I can personally attest through their endeavor above all else Julia and Joel take pleasure in witnessing others become accomplished fine art photographers. Thank you both for sharing."

- Richard Terpolilli – Fine Art Photographer

"If you’re interested in black and white photography, the names Joel Tjintjelaar  and Julia Anna Gospodarou  will probably need no introduction. The work of both photographers has helped define, and push the boundaries of long exposure photography, a relatively new genre in the fine art world. Julia and Joel have joined forces to write a new ebook called From Basics to Fine Art: Black and White Photography – Architecture and Beyond. It is principally aimed at photographers interested in using long exposure techniques to photograph buildings, with some chapters being more general and having a wider appeal.(…) You have two photographers whose work I admire immensely explaining how they create their images, from their general philosophy to the specifics of long exposures and post-processing. If you’re ever looked at their photos and wondered how they achieved the results they do then this ebook has the answers. It’s a tremendous act of generosity and sharing. No one else seems to be doing this stuff yet, or at least doing it and teaching it, so that makes some of the content unique. If you’re a fan of either of these authors, and want to learn the secrets behind their work, then it’s a must buy."

- Andrew Gibson - Photographer & Writer (DPS - Digital Photography School)

"I've just spent the past 3 weeks, not just reading and learning about Black and White, Long Exposure Architectural Fine Art Photography, but feeling like I’ve shared an intimate conversation with it’s authors. “From Basics to Fine Art” is an echo of both Joel and Julia’s love for Architectural Photography, and it’s a book that’s far more than the pages it’s written on. (…) ” …to review this book would be like reviewing the Bible. An almost impossible task, due to the amount and depth of content to be covered.” (…) “I can only do this with words, “It’s a Masterpiece”, for anyone that has any interest in shooting Black and White Long Exposure Architectural Fine Art Photography. This title simply has to be on your bookshelf. If you’re just starting out, or already an expert in this field, again …. buy this book you will learn far more than you expect from it. I certainly did.” (…) “To conclude …. Circa 1950, Ansel Adams first published a trilogy of photography books called, “The Camera, The Negative and The Print”, widely accepted as the gospel in terms of producing and printing photographic images. I can’t help but think that Joel and Julia have produced a volume that will have the same effect as Ansel’s books did, and continue to do so to this day.”

- Antony Northcutt – Fine Art Photographer & Instructor

"I started reading books by lots of different photographers that specialized in various fields of photography, trying to rekindle that spark that made me love photography in the first place.  One book stood out head and shoulders from the rest. "From Basics to Fine Art - Black and White Photography, Architecture and beyond" by Joel Tjintjelaar and Julia Anna Gospodarou.  The title is self explanatory. They share in detail their way of approaching a black and white fine art shoot, how to (en)Vision™ the soul of a structure, from planning to final execution. Lots of tips and tricks to sidestep the learning curve. I found the chapter dedicated to the proper processing of black and white conversions very helpful. I still have to finish the 400+ page book, but I've learnt so much already. Joel and Julia Anna also touch on the use of filters, other essential equipment and how to use it properly. This is an essential "bible" of sorts for anyone remotely interested in black and white fine art photography. Its an overload of information, and one of the most generous books I've read in terms of the knowledge that is shared. "

- Marcell van Aswegen – Fine Art Photographer

"Honestly speaking, I purchased in my life so many books and video tutorials but no comparison at all with your book. The way you explain the vision and technique is beyond imagination, even small macro details is there. No words to describe such a great book. Really, I'm impressed with the amount of info. So many questions I'm trying to answer for a long time and I finally found the correct answer. Chapeaux to both of you and thank you again."

- Dany Eid – Fine Art Photographer

"I would like to thank both Julia and Joel for creating this magnificent work, "From Basic To Fine Art"! It's on top of my list of favorite photography books. In fact, it's the best and most complete work I have ever red about fine art black and white photography. So my advise to all who are serious about art and photography in particular: Buy, read and study "From Basic To Fine Art"!"

- Jan Beernaert – Fine Art Photographer

"I wanted to let you know that the book was amazing, very beautiful but also great lessons and clearly walked me through how you achieved the look of your amazing photos.  I was so inspired by the two of you. I am extremely happy with the purchase and the inspiration and training that the book provided.  Just thought that you would like to know how people see the book and what they are able to achieve thanks to you.

- Nigel Bullers – Fine Art Photographer

"Julia Anna Gospodarou's and Joel Tintjelarr's book "From Basics To Fine-Art" has changed my photography. Your definition on "What Is Fine Art Photography" set the stage for me to up everything I do now with my art. Thank you!!! If you are serious about your art, you need to buy the eBook From Basics to Fine Art.

- David Davis – Fine Art Photographer

"Dear Julia & Joel, Thank you for this book! It’s opening for me a whole new life of photography. Over the past years I've be thinking: "What do I like to make pictures of?”. And with this book you hit me and this is what I like. A few weeks ago I showed a picture I have made according to your book and people liked it. So, I’m very happy and that’s because of you! Thank you for that! The book is very special and different from all the other books about photography. It helps you create a vision for the longer time. Thank you from the bottom of my hearth."

- Jan Bubbermann – Fine Art Photographer

"The book has been my companion for the past weeks and what a delicious time it has been! The book is very well written and the title couldn't fit better to the content. You managed to cover from scratch to the cherry on top of the cake. Impressive accomplishment! I was quite surprised for you guys even sharing the business model. Congratulations for such an open will to share. For me, the shooting technique was absorbed smoothly, and although I already had some of the initial knowledge, it was quite refreshing to go through it with the connective line to reach the final goal of a fine art image. The post processing  has bigger depth and it is still in abortion. I will have to consolidate that information with practice on some of my images. Wrapping up, I'm officially a big fan of the book.

BLACK & WHITE FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY FROM START TO FINISH

LEARN THE REAL WORKFLOW - EMPOWER YOURSELF

Work with the software you have - no need to buy any extra photoshop actions, panels, presets, plugins, etc.

In more than 5.5 hours of video demonstrations, structured on 6 main modules and an impressive number of 50+ video sections, this video course will give you the tools you have been searching for and set you free as a black and white photography artist.

Each course module treats a different aspect of creating a black and white fine art photograph, with an accent on extensive advanced post-processing.

Taught by an internationally award-winning photographer and architect who has taught thousands of students as a photography educator, in workshops, lectures and personal tuition, this course will teach you how to conceive, shoot and process your black and white fine art images from start to finish.

Julia Anna Gospodarou has spent more than 30 years immersed in the fields of art, photography, and architectural design, as a professional photographer, workshop instructor, lecturer, and master architect. She gathered a wealth of knowledge, which she now shares through her courses and books.

You will see an outstanding example of this knowledge in this video course, stretching over hours of presentations and practical demonstrations, with hundreds of post-processing tips and tricks next to advanced methods of creating the best black and white fine art photography.

You will learn how to use your vision, your photography equipment, and your processing software at their highest level.

The course comes bundled with the 50+-page eBook Ultimate Guide to Black & White Fine Art Photography. The book analyzes the practical and theoretical principles of great black and white fine art photography with plenty of examples of award-winning photographs. The book is the perfect addition to this course.

This course is recommended to both advanced and less advanced photographers. The only prerequisite is to have a general idea about your camera and software. We will take care of the rest in this course together. During her work with students over the years, Julia had great results teaching this method both with advanced students and less experienced ones.

Most of the techniques presented in this course can be applied using any post-processing software because most of them are based on understanding the fundamentals and using them in the best way.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

In this course and eBook, you will learn the secrets of the original method called Photography Drawing created by Julia Anna Gospodarou. The aim of this method is to transform a two-dimensional image taken by the camera into a three-dimensional photograph, where volumes come to life and light shapes the forms. You will learn how to create the three-dimensional shapes you see in Julia’s work so you can make your images come to life too.

This is a universal processing method that can be applied to images ranging from architecture to landscape, portrait, or even street photography.

More to Learn

  • - Working with Layers and Blending Modes beyond the obvious that you probably already know.
  • - Working with simple and complex selections to fully control the distribution of light in the image with my method Photography Drawing, considered revolutionary by those who learned it and are using it.
  • - Simple to advanced ways of using masks to selectively work on different areas of the image.
  • - The technique of using luminosity masks to get the utmost control of selective intensities of light.
  • - Extensive Work in Lightroom, Photoshop, Topaz Labs, Etc.

We will be working extensively both in Lightroom and in Photoshop, learning what each of them does best and how to combine them with the best plugins on the market. This workflow focuses on giving you the maximum efficiency of your tools, so you take full control of your software and use it to turn your vision into reality.

However, even if you do not use Lightroom or Photoshop, you can apply these techniques in a similar way in Camera RAW, Capture One, or DxO PhotoLab, for instance, or in a different software of your choice. The name of the tools and the way you apply them may be a little different, but the principles will be the same, and they can be adapted to many different pieces of software.

TESTIMONIALS

"Julia Anna, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your latest tutorial. I downloaded it on the day of its release and have just completed watching all the chapters. I found it enlightening and opened my mind to alternatives to my creativity. Whilst I am fairly comfortable with the technical aspect of processing, the one element and to me the most important, the artistic aspect, is something I know I need to develop more. Watching you go through your processing workflow has been a revelation and now I feel I can begin to look at my work from a totally different perspective. For that, I am truly grateful and forever thankful and now look forward to moving forward in my own artistic journey. Kind regards" - Jim S.

"I bought the course. My first impression is that it’s a great advanced course. A great case full of tools, techniques and inspiration. I will need a lot of time and energy to then implement the vision of my pictures. But nothing comes from nothing. Many Thanks." - Ralf G.

"I just bought your last course a couple of days ago. It has been so rewarding to watch this. I still struggle a bit with the quality of my selections but I am slowly getting there. Today I posted my first image processed with your technique here on IG. If you bother to see you will understand that I still have a lot to learn about light. But for me this is a huge leap in the right direction. Thank you so much for teaching me the new techniques." - Jan Eigil M.

"I absolutely loved the new video and book. Thank you so much.

I purchased Julia’s new video, From Vision To Final Image-Mastering BW Photography, on the day it was released. I must say, it’s the best investment I made regarding the advancing of my ability to visualize and process images.

In five and a half hours Julia took me through the complete process. The visualization, the exposure, the processing. Nothing was left out. The information presented impressed me. It’s not a recipe to follow to get the same flavour every time, but a set of principles to follow to achieve my vision.

I’m no stranger to Julia (I sometimes tease her that I want to be as good as her when I grow up). I’ve followed her for many years. I have her book, and I’ve studied her tutorials. Yet, this new video is enlightening, and I’ll be re-watching it several times.

If you are intent on improving, and honing your black and white photography then this video course is definitely a must-have in your library. And, a must-watch." - Mike H.

"I was so excited to receive the news about your course. I did not have a chance to attend your live (physical or on-line) workshops and I guess this is the next best option for me. The videos are excellent as they give me a very good helicopter overview of how your whole process works. After watching your videos, they cleared up many of my questions/gaps and now I have a better overall understanding of how to create fine art architectural photos.

I enjoy your teaching videos a lot and look forward to you publishing more such series in the coming future." - Peter M.

"I am enjoying very much this course, in fact I will develop some pictures i have from the past following your advice, let’s see how it goes.

Julia Anna’s approach in her “Mastering BW processing” videos is really outstanding. She has helped me understand step by step the process and the tricks behind the processing BW. This course is the perfect companion to the previous set of videos in which the capturing process was analyzed." - Julen J.

"I purchased the video, after seeing a link to a sample YouTube segment, and I am very happy with my purchase! I knew most of the techniques used, but hadn’t equated them to edit in that way. Very interesting and artistic! I love the humor in your lessons too. I can’t wait to see more of your incredible work!!" - Aaron N.

"Thank you for your wonderful course From Vision to Final Image. Until now it was, without a personal course, hard to understand how the post-processing took place. And now, this course makes everything (a lot) clear, from Vision to the Final Image. The image below I made it, inspired by you, on my own way, now I will do it again. Thank you so much for this video course. It will help me a lot." - Ferdinand de G.

"This is the rare course that covers both the artistic vision side “the why” behind your images, and the technical “how to” side of it. If you’re a fan of Julia Anna’s work in any way this course is for you. It is the photography equivalent of a world-class magician revealing all of his magical tricks. As “Spinal Tap” famously coined, Julia Anna has turned this course “up to eleven." - Lance S.

"The course is excellent. I am working my way through the videos and they are extremely clear and helpful. I have always wanted to learn how to produce fine art architectural images. I have watched a lot of videos but they always have all the isolated sections done. Here Julia Anna actually shows how to create the separate areas that we can then work on. That one lesson is worth the cost of the course. So glad I bought this course." – Phillip Z.

"I must say the course is excellent. I’ve been a fan of you for a long time. I’ve bought all the books and videos. Some real lightbulb moments for me." - Fergal O.

"I am completely satisfied with all three (en)Visionography courses with video training that I have purchased. They begin with a brief overview of transforming a picture into a vision. The author’s explanation of the emotional nature of the creative process and the cultivation of perception are superb. The technical methods are clearly explained and satisfying results were produced quicker than I had anticipated. The courses have been motivating and aroused a new level of passion to just get out there and experience the world differently. Please keep them coming.

I watched a few of your youtube videos. They too were excellent and I’m sure would benefit photographers of any skill level. Congratulations on your latest efforts and happy clicking." – Bruce M.

"I find your work deeply inspiring. I have enjoyed all your videos and written material but I particularly appreciate the approach you have taken in this latest video in showing us the whole process from start to finish. It is a wonderful learning tool."- Louise S.

"I’m working through your excellent and inspiring course. Thank you for sharing your insights, both aesthetic, technical and metaphysical." - Gerald V.

"Julia Anna’s approach, (en)Visonography, is a game-changer for anyone looking to improve their Fine Art Photography." – Larry D.

"Julia Anna changed the way I see, the way I approach a subject, the way I react to light, and the way I process my images." - Jim W.

"What a wonderful instructive course which has really inspired me to perfect my BW fine art photography. I learned so much as Julia Anna shared her processing methodology in full and easy to follow detail.” – Alan T.
