How to Deal with Anger One Day Workshop

This workshop has been devised in response to the question parents ask me most frequently after talks and workshops. It’s a topic parents want to talk about – but are scared to talk about in public: how do I stop getting so angry with my kids?

It’s a good question! And then there’s its logical follow-up. Given that we will get angry with our children on occasion, how can we deal with our anger in a healthy manner? How can we teach our children to manage their anger effectively?

Many parents try valiantly to pretend they’re not angry and then explode in ways that they later regret.

Diffusing our ‘anger buttons’ and learning new ways to behave when we’re angry is not an easy process but it is possible. And it is essential if we are to teach our children functional ways to handle their own anger. On the day you will learn about the 8 ways that we generally manage our anger (5 unhealthy, 3 healthy). You will learn helpful psychological models that will help you understand and manage your anger. The “dynamite” model will help you understand the biology of anger. Cognitive behavioural models will help you hear the cognitive underpinnings of your anger. Working with this, you will start to unpick the thinking that causes “explosive” moments. We will try various self-soothing techniques and learn the importance of taking steps to minimise the rupture to your relationship with your child. We will also uncover the all-important role of “repair” and amends following angry outburst.

Many parents are secretly unhappy about how they speak to their children when they are angry. They are also mortified and angry about how their children speak to THEM when they are angry! Many couples are torn apart watching each other over-react to the children they love.

To overcome anger it is necessary for us to talk about it. This workshop helps parents explore – in a safe and supportive environment – one of the most difficult issues they face. Finding the courage to do this workshop will bring lasting benefits to you and your family.
